Come in & welcome

Hello, and welcome to my new blog.

My name is Jeremy Marshall, and I’m currently an unemployed minister living in northern California. I’m originally from the Huntsville, AL area.

I was let go from the church where I’d preached for nearly seven years November 10, 2021. Nothing scandalous or salacious happened. Other church leadership just decided I needed to move along. There’s more to it than that, of course. But it’s really not that interesting.

Anyway, God didn’t fire me.

I’m searching for my next paid ministry (or whatever comes next), but still, His word yet burns like a fire in my heart, shut up in my bones (Jeremiah 20:9).

So here I am.

I’m not really any good at small talk or schmoozing, so let me deliver the goods.

I am a theologian of the cross.

Like Martin Luther said, I fully embrace my identity as simul justus et peccator–at once righteous and sinner. Like St. Paul in Romans 7.

I read scripture, and preach and teach it, with a conspicuously Christ-centered, Gospel-focused bent. Is there really any other way to read the Bible as a Christian?

I’m a stickler for the Law / Gospel distinction, even though that’s terribly uncool these days.

I am a fan of old dead theologians. And others who are not dead yet.

When I’m not reading old dead, or not quite old and dead, theologians, you might find me reading Wendell Berry, Marilynne Robinson, or Flannery O’Connor; the chilling tales of Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft; or the poetry of Anne Bradstreet, Phillis Wheatley, T.S. Eliot, or Malcolm Guite.

If I’m not doing that, you might also catch me in more low-brow cultural pursuits, like watching old sitcoms, horror movies, or classic professional wrestling. They’re all morality tales, you know.

I’m also an audiophile. Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, and Merle Haggard are my all-time favorites. But I’ve an exceedingly broad palate. Some other music I enjoy immensely: King Crimson; Black Sabbath; X; the Cure; Miles Davis; Brian Eno; Herbie Hancock; Genesis (but only the Peter Gabriel & Steve Hackett era); Max Richter; Erik Satie; John Coltrane; Elvis Costello; Leonard Cohen; Nick Drake; Pink Floyd; Hawkwind; Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds; and Kraftwerk.

I play guitar. I’m an INFJ. My Hogwarts house is Ravenclaw.

I’ve been married to Megan for over 11 years, and we have a two-year-old son named August. We call him Auggie.

Finally–I am praying for the Lord to do again for His church what He did through the likes of Martin Luther and John Calvin 500 years ago.

Sola gratia. Sola fide. Solus Christus. Sola scriptura. Soli Deo gloria!
